This evening I walked the ground where the majority of Vienna’s Jews were murdered.

I posted the above April 1, 2018 after visiting the camp on my way into Minsk from the airport. In Minsk again for the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory May last year I looked at Малы Трасцянец marked on my map and decided not to revisit just then. There were plenty of other sites in Minsk I had not yet been to. The name came up again recently when reading Vladimir Bogomolov’s Ivan, and now today rewatching Tarkovsky’s Ivan’s Childhood.
Although scholars consider it the fourth-largest Nazi extermination site (after Auschwitz, Treblinka and Bełżec, or after Auschwitz, Treblinka and Majdanek),[11] Maly Trostenets is often regarded as the least-known Nazi death camps.[11][12] The genocide of Jews at Maly Trostenets was not mentioned at the Nuremberg Trials, and remained largely unknown to the wider public and was largely ignored by Soviet and Belarusian officials until the late 1990s.
