There is not a soul in Washington who can\u00a0say\u00a0that they\u00a0have\u00a0won or stopped any conflict.\u00a0And though there might be the beloved perfumed princes in the form of the Petraeus\u2019 and Wes Clarks\u2019, or\u00a0the\u00a0so-called\u00a0warrior monks like\u00a0Mattis\u00a0and McMaster, we\u2019ve had\u00a0more\u00a0than\u00a0a generation of\u00a0national security leaders who\u00a0sadly\u00a0and fraudulently\u00a0have done little of consequence.\u00a0And\u00a0yet\u00a0we (and others) embrace them, even the highly partisan\u00a0formers\u00a0who masquerade as \u201canalysts\u201d.\u00a0We do so ignoring the\u00a0empirical truth of what\u00a0they\u00a0have wrought: There is not one country in the Middle East that is safer today than it was 18 years ago. Indeed the world becomes ever more polarized and dangerous.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2019\/01\/03\/veteran-nbcmsnbc-journalist-blasts-the-network-for-being-captive-to-the-national-security-state-and-reflexively-pro-war-to-stop-trump\">Intercept article<\/a> Glenn Greenwald describes Arkin as a &#8222;longtime prominent war and military reporter, perhaps best known for his\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/projects.washingtonpost.com\/top-secret-america\/articles\/a-hidden-world-growing-beyond-control\/\">groundbreaking, three-part Washington Post series<\/a>\u00a0in 2010&#8243;. I know Arkin from 1980 and his book SIOP, which I used in trying to broaden people&#8217;s knowledge of the US Single Integrated Operating Plan for nuclear war.<\/p>\n<p>Greenwald&#8217;s article is worth reading from beginning to end, I think. Referencing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/magazine\/story\/2018\/02\/06\/john-brennan-james-claper-michael-hayden-former-cia-media-216943\">Jack Shafer<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2026filling your news and analyst slots with former security state officials as MSNBC and NBC have done is tantamount to becoming state TV, since \u201ctheir first loyalty \u2014 and this is no slam \u2014 is to the agency from which they hail.\u201d As he put it: \u201cImagine a TV network covering the auto industry through the eyes of dozens of paid former auto executives and you begin to appreciate the current peculiarities.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>William Arkin: Despite\u00a0being at\u00a0\u201cwar,\u201d no great\u00a0wartime\u00a0leaders or visionaries\u00a0are\u00a0emerging.
