(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/07\/11\/us\/heat-wave-south-arizona-texas.html\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Another<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u00a0did so in passing as one possible line\u00a0<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of inquiry). Reports from\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/dangerous-triple-digit-heat-baking-southwest-southeast-latest\/story?id=101001913\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ABC News<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Wkz0E0ZjV0U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">NBC News<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u00a0conspicuously ignored climate change\u00a0<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">altogether, as did articles in\u00a0<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/weather\/2023\/07\/12\/heat-wave-forecast-arizona-texas-southwest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington Post<\/a><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u00a0and the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/heat-wave-dangerous-temperatures-to-scorch-u-s-southwest-south-3179dc7d?mod=lead_feature_below_a_pos1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Wall Street Journal<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">One can forgive the average media consumer\u00a0<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">for being confused by\u00a0<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">this disconnect\u00a0<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">between how the media discusses \u2014 correctly \u2014 the existential nature of the climate crisis in\u00a0<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">theory, compared to how they discuss this crisis when it manifests as extreme weather. Each day they\u00a0<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">open a paper or turn on a TV and see increasingly extreme weather conditions that, more often\u00a0<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">than not, are presented as entirely random or an act of God \u2014 divorced from or incidental to the\u00a0<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">human political and economic decisions that are actually causing them.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>San Francisco Chronicle: Take a recent sampling of coverage of the heat wave in the Southwest.
